Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes

During Sunday night’s 29-17 loss to the Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes took a big hit on the sideline late in the game. The hit was ultimately flagged for unnecessary roughness – probably incorrectly, since Mahomes was still in bounds – but Tom Brady was not happy with Mahomes for allowing himself to take the hit in the first place.

During this week’s episode of his Let’s Go! podcast, Tom Brady addressed the big hit on Patrick Mahomes, criticizing the quarterback for putting himself in a position to be hit and not getting rid of the ball.

“There was a hit on Patrick Mahomes last night where he was running out of bounds where he wasn’t even out of bounds,” Brady said on the show according to Heavy.com. “Quarterbacks need to learn how to throw the ball away. They need to learn how to read defenses and get the ball out of their hands. I always felt that my best protection was getting rid of the ball.”

It’s worth noting that Mahomes was trying to extend a play and get a first down on a crucial drive for the Chiefs. Still, to Brady’s point, the Chiefs would much prefer him to get rid of the ball and avoid the hit than try to get one extra yard in a regular season game.

Mahomes’ health and protection is worth much more than any yard he could get during a game.
