With Sunday’s loss to the Houston Texans, the Tennessee Titans secured the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. Given the team’s need at the quarterback position, it’s been widely expected that the team could select a quarterback with the pick, but it sounds like there’s a chance they go a different route in finding a quarterback.

While head coach Brian Callahan did not rule out the possibility of selecting a quarterback with the top pick, he also brought up a different possibility: signing a veteran quarterback in free agency.

“We’re in position to potentially draft a quarterback,” Callahan said according to the team website. “We’re in position to, with the cap stability and flexibility we have, to potentially sign a veteran quarterback. And, so, we’re going to explore every avenue to do that.”

It’s not entirely clear which veteran quarterbacks will be available on the market this offseason, but this strategy worked well for several teams last offseason.

The Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers added veteran quarterbacks that propelled them to the playoffs. However, the Las Vegas Raiders and Atlanta Falcons each signed veteran quarterbacks that they subsequently benched.

Regardless, it sounds like the team is indeed committed to bringing in a new quarterback this offseason.

“There’s a lot of ways you can do this process and we’ll unturn every stone to find out what the best one is for us. There’s a lot of work to be done between now and those decision-making times. But yeah, I think it’s very clear that that’s a position that we have to do our due diligence on and our work on both in free agency and into the draft,” Callahan said.

The Titans had Will Levis, Mason Rudolph, and Trevor Siemian on their roster this season, but both Rudolph and Siemian are free agents and are expected to leave the team.

We’ll have to see who the Titans turn to at the quarterback position and if they do indeed decide to bring in a veteran option.
