Earlier this month, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker gave a pretty controversial commencement address that many have criticized as being sexist as he suggested that a woman’s most important role is as a homemaker. His speech also included a reference to a song by Taylor Swift – the girlfriend of his teammate Travis Kelce – but in a brutal twist, it’s pretty clear he didn’t pay attention to what the rest of the song was about.
During the speech, Harrison Butker quoted a line from Taylor Swift’s song “Bejeweled” from her Midnights album.
“As my teammate’s girlfriend says: ‘Familiarity breeds contempt,’” Butker said during the speech.
But as one fan points out, the entire message behind the song Butker was quoting probably isn’t something that Butker would have liked to include in his speech.
I actually think that Harrison Butker quoting Taylor Swift in his dumpster fire of a speech is hilarious when you consider that the song he quoted (Bejeweled) is about a successful woman telling a mediocre man to step aside so she can shine.

“I actually think that Harrison Butker quoting Taylor Swift in his dumpster fire of a speech is hilarious when you consider that the song he quoted (Bejeweled) is about a successful woman telling a mediocre man to step aside so she can shine,” McKenzie Hopson David said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
Obviously, Butker made a pretty brutal mistake by quoting this song without actually knowing what it was about, and that mistake has led to a lot of reactions on social media.
It just proves men don’t understand Taylor Swift songs they take one lyric in isolation and apply it to a time they did sports and think they can relate https://t.co/RplB0IPSoF

Appropriate, given the total lack of self-awareness that Mr. Butler showed in his speech. https://t.co/HOxbkJhbx7

Clearly, Butker did not pay attention to what he was quoting.
