Earlier this month, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker caused quite a stir when he expressed some controversial opinions in a commencement address at a small Catholic college in Kansas. And now, Taylor Swift fans are not at all happy with the way that Jason Kelce responded to the speech.
In Butker’s commencement address, he offered several controversial statements including a suggestion that a woman’s most important role is to be a homemaker, a wife, and a mother. This caused a pretty strong reaction from women, particularly considering that he was speaking to a group of college graduations, many of whom were women, and was essentially telling them that their accomplishments as college graduates were not as important as being a homemaker.
While Jason Kelce, the brother of Taylor Swift’s boyfriend Travis Kelce, did not necessarily agree with this, he did seemingly suggest that women should not have been offended by what Butker said.
“I don’t think comparing NFL players to the plight of women is fair, and I understand what you’re saying. That being said, if someone gave a speech about how they don’t like football and think it’s stupid, I can 100% guarantee I would not be offended,” Jason Kelce said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
When Taylor Swift fans found this post on social media from Jason Kelce, they were pretty furious.
someone disliking football is not the same as someone literally saying women should not have any basic human rights and are basically just born to serve men and to birth children. a lot of young female fans look up to you and this is not the way to treat them. https://t.co/WWjAsgM7Ia

People celebrating the response on the podcast. But Jason clarifies we shouldn't be offended. The audacity to have this much privilege and tell oppressed people not to be offended by people trying to oppress them. https://t.co/JZuogAyFx1

I’d love for Butker to give your daughters the same speech on their high school or university graduation days to see how quickly the tune changes. https://t.co/RaUx10gc3y

So many "good" men will defend a misogynistic man they don't know before they'll defend a woman they do. https://t.co/M448tZdFvU

first sentence: comparing football to women’s struggles is not fair
Last sentence: compares a speech given by a man who hate women to people not liking footballconclusion: men are so disappointing https://t.co/nQcAqKdmuj

yikes, not at all the same. it’s not about being offended it’s about women being talked down to and told we should want to give up our lives to support our husbands and children. I think if Kylie asked you to raise your daughters while she sought her passion you wouldn’t be keen. https://t.co/dzAapyBjmU

NFL is different to the rights of women??? in what world is a joke about the NFL as offensive as a speech about how women’s purpose in life is being a wife and having kids. harrison butker is a pro-life homophobe misogynist who wants to send women back to the 50s https://t.co/TV22gkB9FC

if only you had access to a world-famous pop star who built her entire platform on feminism that you could call to give you a brief rundown on how misogyny is not at all the same as not liking football…ah, alas. https://t.co/0yWRCZ84EA

Needless to say, they were not a fan of this opinion from the older Kelce brother.
