Earlier this month, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker made some controversial comments during a commencement address that many have deemed sexist as he suggested that the “most important” role for women is as “homemakers.” He also quoted noted feminist Taylor Swift in that same speech, and Swifties don’t seem happy about it.
In the speech, Harrison Butker quoted the lyric “familiarity breeds contempt” from the Taylor Swift song “Bejeweled” from her Midnights album.
“As my teammate’s girlfriend says: ‘Familiarity breeds contempt,’” Butker said during the speech.
As one fan pointed out, though, Butker did not seem to pay attention to the rest of the song because the entire message behind the song isn’t something that Butker would have liked to include in his speech.
I actually think that Harrison Butker quoting Taylor Swift in his dumpster fire of a speech is hilarious when you consider that the song he quoted (Bejeweled) is about a successful woman telling a mediocre man to step aside so she can shine.

“I actually think that Harrison Butker quoting Taylor Swift in his dumpster fire of a speech is hilarious when you consider that the song he quoted (Bejeweled) is about a successful woman telling a mediocre man to step aside so she can shine,” McKenzie Hopson David said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
Needless to say, Swifties were not happy at all about Butker quoting Swift in a speech they deemed as sexist and misogynistic – especially when he didn’t seem to understand the context of the whole song.
I keep saying this. He used arguably one of the most famous and successful women, who is not married or has children, as an example. Not only that, the song is chosen to quote is about leaving shitty men. 😂 https://t.co/C4yEdgLhwx

It just proves men don’t understand Taylor Swift songs they take one lyric in isolation and apply it to a time they did sports and think they can relate https://t.co/RplB0IPSoF

excellent point. hadnt thought of that before. thought butker was so demeaning of swift for not naming her…as if to make her invisible, as if her only worth was as a girlfriend…not acknowledging the many decades she worked to reach this pinnacle of accomplishment. https://t.co/P2M6e6ViWF

I haven’t watched anything from him because I don’t need to hear such a small man speak (the smallest man who ever lived, if you will) but HAHAHAHAHA https://t.co/I7bt4n6dvE

he quoted “his teammates girlfriend. “ That about sums it up. https://t.co/9nXBU5VaNv

@mckenziehopson Clearly he didn’t do his research. Time to boycott him and the Chiefs by not buying his jersey nor supporting the team until they take a stance on what they are deeming his “personal” appearance! https://t.co/HV8S4ZE4A0

Clearly, Butker upset the Swifties.
