This offseason, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and wide receiver Mike Evans face a bit of an uncertain future. But it does appear that one thing is decided: the team will not place a franchise tag on the star wide receiver this offseason.
Mike Evans is set to become a free agent in March, but according to NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Buccaneers do not consider Evans to be a candidate for a franchise tag this offseason.
On Sunday afternoon, league insider Adam Schefter released his list of who he believes to be candidates for a franchise tag this offseason. Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans was not on Schefter’s list, and he quickly explained why.

“Due to his 2023 cap number, Buccaneers WR Mike Evans’ projected franchise tag would be $28.4 million – instead of the regular $21.6M – meaning he is not expected to be a tag candidate,” Schefter said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
So if Evans is not a candidate for a franchise tag, that means that in order for him to return to the Buccaneers next season, the two sides will have to work out a new contract.
We’ll have to see how that process goes.
