The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were able to re-sign a couple of key players already this offseason as they signed quarterback Baker Mayfield and wide receiver Mike Evans to contract extensions. Now, the team is trying to work out a contract extension for star safety Antoine Winfield Jr., and it sounds like those talks are progressing well.
The Buccaneers have already used their franchise tag on Antoine Winfield Jr., but they continue to negotiate a long-term contract. According to Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht, those conversations are going quite well.
“We’ve had really good discussions there,” Licht said according to a transcript from the team. “Once again, it’s like the same thing when we were at the combine talking about Baker [Mayfield] and Mike [Evans] and Lavonte [David]. We really want them here, we want them here long term, I think they want to be here long term. We’ve had a good track record with getting things done. I feel pretty good about things getting done.”
Over the past several seasons, Winfield has emerged as one of the most important players on the defense for Tampa Bay. We’ll have to see whether or not the team can get a deal done before the start of the season.
