Situations change fast in the NFL, and few know this better than Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson. After his time with the Seattle Seahawks came to an abrupt end, the Super Bowl-winning quarterback spent two seasons with the Denver Broncos, before finding himself with the Pittsburgh Steelers this season.
It looks like another change may be in Wilson’s future. The quarterback situation in Pittsburgh has been fluent since Wilson suffered a calf injury in training camp. Although Wilson was officially named the team’s starter, his calf has prevented him from seeing any action on the field.
Wilson’s replacement, Justin Fields, has stepped in and performed well. The former Chicago Bear has led the Steelers to a 2-0 start on the season and is line to start in the team’s home opener against the Los Angeles Chargers as Wilson continues to recover.
If Fields continues to deliver wins, Wilson’s time in Pittsburgh could be even shorter than it was in Denver.
According to Steelers Depot, a panel of analysts discussed the Steelers moving on from the veteran on Monday morning. Former NFL head coach Rex Ryan seems to think there’d be a lot of interest around the league for Wilson’s services.
“Yeah I think he’d be the number one guy you would call,” Ryan said on Get Up. “There’s no doubt you would. And here’s the thing, and people are gonna be, ‘Oh, you can’t, then what do you ask for?’ Here’s what you ask for. You ask for a first-round pick.”
If the Steelers receive a first-round offer and Fields continues to impress it’s hard to imagine the Steelers not pushing the button.
If Fields wins again in Pittsburgh on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers, it’ll be interesting to see what it means for Wilson’s future.
