Matt Cassel was horrendous during Sunday’s 30-7 home blowout loss to New England. The veteran QB completed just 19 of 36 passes for 202 yards, 1 touchdown and 4 interceptions and managed to start TEDDY! TEDDY! TEDDY! chants on numerous occasions. Unfortunately for those Vikings fans hoping to see the rookie start next weeks game at New Orleans, head coach Mike Zimmer says nope.

I’m going to hold the quarterback position just like every position here to the same standard, and I also said I wasn’t going to have a quick hook. Matt needs to play better. It’s pretty obvious he needs to play better. We all need to play better. I need to coach better.

The team was flying high following a dominating season-opening victory in St. Louis but the news of Adrian Peterson’s indictment and subsequent deactivation certainly put a damper on the home opener before Cassel could even throw his first interception.

While Zimmer did not mention, of course, when he would consider starting Bridgewater, the reinstatement of AP surely provides both additional comfort for Cassel and a potential security blanket for the rookie if he were to start this season.
