The Kansas City Chiefs ultimately selected quarterback Patrick Mahomes with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2017 draft after trading up in the draft from the Buffalo Bills. But if the Chiefs didn’t move up in the draft, there’s a very good chance Mahomes could have landed in New Orleans instead as the Saints were very interested in him, as well. But there was one thing then-Saints head coach Sean Payton didn’t like about Mahomes – his voice.
During a recent interview with NFL insider Peter King of Pro Football Talk, Sean Payton had a pretty brutal message for Patrick Mahomes about his voice as he made a joke about how much he liked him as a player.
“I remember thinking, ‘The only thing I don’t like about the player is his voice.’ That’s how great an impression he left on us.” Payton told King for his Football Morning in America column on Monday.
Obviously, Payton and the Saints never had a chance to select Mahomes in the draft as the Chiefs traded up to select him with the No. 10 overall pick leaving the Saints to select Marshon Lattimore with the No. 11 pick – a player they were also very excited about in New Orleans.
