FedEx field, home field of the Washington Redskins, has been under much scrutiny as of late. After Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III tore his ACL and LCL in last week’s wildcard game versus the Seattle Seahawks, head coach Mike Shanahan faced much criticism for keeping RGIII in the game when he was clearly injured. It wasn’t just Shanahan’s decision to leave RGIII in the game that ultimately led to the quarterback re-injuring his knee, however. Many players are noting the poor condition of the field as one of the reasons RGIII was injured.
Before the game, Seattle Seahawks fullback Michael Robinson surveyed Fedex field, documenting its poor condition on his phone prior to kickoff. In the video you can hear Robinson and some of his teammates describing how bad the condition of the field is.
From CBS Sports:
“The soil over here is bad, man,” Robinson said as he pointed his camera at his feet. “This is terrible. This is terrible. … I’m surprised they didn’t dump sand in the middle.”
You can hear his teammates around him inspecting the field and describing how the supposed grass was really just painted dirt.
You can see Robinson pawing at the surface with his foot before chuckling and saying, “This is crazy.”
RGIII wasn’t the only player to have a season-ending injury during the game. Seahawks leading pass rusher Chris Clemon’s also went down with a torn ACL. Clemon’s agent spoke out against the poor conditions of the field, describing it as “crappy.”
