The San Francisco 49ers already have a starting quarterback after Brock Purdy managed to put up MVP-caliber numbers and lead the team to the Super Bowl in just his first full season as a starter in the league. But it sounds like the team is still bringing in another quarterback to add some depth behind him.
According to a report from NFL insider Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the San Francisco 49ers have reached a deal with veteran quarterback Joshua Dobbs to bring him in to serve as a backup for Brock Purdy.
“The #49ers are signing QB Josh Dobbs to a one-year deal that includes $2.25M fully guaranteed with $750K in playtime incentives, per source,” Pelissero said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

While Dobbs is not expected to be the starter over Purdy, his signing still generated quite a buzz on social media.
The Linsanity-like Passtronaut run will always be one of my favorite random moments in Vikings lore. 🫡 https://t.co/hG7jggF6bk

Probably below the cutoff for a comp pick. If Dobbs earns most of those incentives, the Vikings may wind up with a 2025 7th-round comp pick https://t.co/hvov6K95NB

Shout out to Dobbs for that crazy 2 game run. Was the most fun I had watching Minnesota all last year. https://t.co/nrc4zVK81L

What a past year, or even seven months, for Dobbs. Good for him. https://t.co/AXjIrMk2t5

Great move by the 49ers. Backup QB is important and Dobbs had experience starting on short notice in multiple systems in 2023. https://t.co/XBoC5YK81d

Dobbs will obviously not be the starting quarterback for the team this upcoming season, but he has extensive experience as a starter, starting 12 games for the Arizona Cardinals and the Minnesota Vikings last season.
So if the team ever needs to turn to Dobbs next season to fill in for Purdy in the case of an injury or something else, he’s experienced and prepared.
