The San Francisco 49ers clinched a spot in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday evening in absolutely thrilling fashion when they overcame a 17-point halftime deficit to defeat the Detroit Lions by a final score of 34-31. And as it turns out, the comeback victory was more than just impressive, it was absolutely historic.

As Katie Sharp of Stathead pointed out on social media shortly after the game, the San Francisco 49ers completed the single biggest second-half comeback of any team in the history of a conference championship game.

“49ers are the first team to trail by 17+ points at halftime and win a Conference Championship Game,” Sharp said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

Obviously, this is absolutely insane news as it puts the insane comeback victory into context, and the NFL world had a lot to say about it on social media as a result.

It’s certainly impressive from the Niners and something that no team has ever done before, but the job obviously isn’t done. The team now has to take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII where they have a chance to avenge their Super Bowl loss following the 2019 season.
