It was a disappointing season for the San Francisco 49ers, and the team is making a coaching change as a result.
The Niners made the Super Bowl last year, narrowly losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in an overtime thriller. But they were unable to repeat that success this season, and the team has decided to fire its defensive coordinator as a result.
According to a report from Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, the Niners have decided to fire defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen.
“Nick Sorensen will not return as 49ers defensive coordinator, a league source said. The hope is that the 49ers can retain him on Kyle Shanahan’s staff. There are a few attractive options for the 49ers to now consider for the D.C. role,” Maiocco said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
Sorensen joined the San Francisco 49ers staff back in 2022, joining as a defensive assistant. In 2023, he was promoted to defensive pass game specialist and nickel cornerbacks coach. Then, he took over as the team’s defensive coordinator a year ago
It’s not clear who the Niners intend to target to be his replacement or what role he would take if he remained on staff.
