The San Francisco 49ers and star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk face a bit of an uncertain future. While the team has reportedly met with Aiyuk and decided not to trade him this offseason, it seems like it would be quite difficult to sign him to a long-term contract extension given the team’s pretty brutal salary cap situation.

As NFL analyst Brandon Kollmann pointed out on social media, the San Francisco 49ers may simply not have enough salary cap space to sign Brandon Aiyuk to a long-term deal.

“The 49ers are projected to be 39 million over the cap next year and basically any moves they make to clear major space for an Aiyuk deal this year or next would just barely get them back in the green. And that’s without factoring in Purdy. I just don’t think it gets done, boys,” Kollmann said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

Obviously, this is some pretty brutal news about the 49ers as they face a pretty tough salary cap situation, and it led to a lot of reactions on social media.

There’s still a chance the Niners do try to create the salary cap space to sign Aiyuk to an extension. But even if that is the case, the team is still facing an absolutely brutal salary cap situation in the coming years.
