The New Orleans Saints had an extremely frustrating season. After starting the season off with a hot two-game winning streak behind what looked at the time like a dominant offense, New Orleans went on to sputter and finished the season 5-12, missing the playoffs.
With the forgettable season in the rearview mirror, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis addressed the state of things, and how he feels about veteran quarterback Derek Carr, who figures to be the Saints’ starter again when next season kicks off.
“I have a high level of confidence in Derek,” Loomis said in a media session on Monday. “He’s done some really good things here.”
Complicating matters concerning Carr’s tenure in New Orleans is his public statement that he has no intention of taking a pay cut in order to remain in New Orleans.
“I got to take care of myself and then the rest after that is really out of my hands,” Carr said, according to Pro Football Talk. “I’ve had great conversations with everyone in this building with [G.M.] Mickey [Loomis], with [owner] Ms. [Gayle] Benson, with everybody.
“And we all have mutual feelings and so my confidence level is very high and what can happen, what could happen. And we’ve shown what it could possibly be at times. The hard part is we had to deal with some stuff that we didn’t get to see that full picture all the time. So we’ll see.”
Loomis said on Monday concerning Carr’s financial situation: “All that has yet to be determined.”
It’ll be interesting to see how the situation resolves itself. If the sides decide that it is in their best interest to move on from one another, there are sure to be teams in need of Carr’s veteran presence.
