When the New Orleans Saints took the field for the final day of their mandatory minicamp on Thursday, they did so without Alvin Kamara.
The star running back’s agent confirmed to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network that Kamara’s absence was related to his contract, as he has been unhappy with the way talks on a potential extension have progressed.
Saints head coach Dennis Allen confirmed to reporters that the five-time Pro Bowl running back participated in the team’s morning walkthrough but left during the practice session. The team could opt to fine Kamara for skipping the final practice of the mandatory minicamp.
While the two-time second-team All-Pro selection still has two years remaining on his contract, it’s effectively a one-year deal. He is slated to earn a base salary of $10.2 million — just $1 million of which is guaranteed — in 2024, with his 2025 base salary consisting of $22.4 million, none of which is guaranteed.
Presumably, the Tennessee product is looking for both a longer deal and one that includes more guaranteed money moving forward. Appearing in 13 games (12 starts) last season, Kamara rushed for 694 yard and five touchdowns on 180 attempts, adding 75 receptions for 466 yards and an additional score in New Orleans’ passing game.
