It’s safe to say that the Denver Broncos’ blockbuster acquisition of former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson didn’t exactly go to plan.
Though Wilson showed glimpses of his former Super Bowl form, he looked like one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the NFL during large swaths of play with his new team.
Wilson’s style then clashed with first-year Broncos coach Sean Payton, who is trying to mold the team into his form after the organization fired his predecessor, Nathaniel Hackett.
That resulted in Wilson being benched this season to avoid the Broncos having to pay out massive contract incentives.
Needless to say, Wilson probably won’t be back next season. And former Indianapolis Colts head coach Jeff Saturday, speaking on ESPN’s Get Up, forecasted the Pittsburgh Steelers as the best fit for Wilson.
“Russell Wilson for Arthur Smith would be the best fit,” Saturday said.
“He wants to play under center. He wants play action. He’s a veteran quarterback, all the different things. I get the whole zone read thing, but Arthur Smith can create a run game no matter what he does. As good as anybody… And you have a vet guy in there that’s won a bunch of games. I know people hate him; dude wins a bunch of freaking games.”
The Steelers have obviously struggled at quarterback since the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger. And Wilson joining the storied franchise might work out for both parties.
