The Pittsburgh Steelers have two quarterbacks on their active roster who started for their respective team last season, Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. And according to Wilson, both he and Fields offer some significant upside as pieces of the Steelers offense.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has already stated that Wilson is in “pole position” to start for the Steelers. He will receive the first opportunity as we approach training camp and the preseason.
That means that Fields will be the one who needs to make a significant impact this offseason if he hopes to take the starting job from Wilson.
Only time will tell whether Fields can do that. But at the very least, Fields has already made a bit of an impact on Wilson, who called his teammate a “franchise quarterback” in a recent interview.
“Justin is obviously one of the most talented guys in the NFL,” Wilson said via Tim Benz of TribLive.com. “You know all the things he can do. The player, the quarterback that he is. He’s dynamic. It’s all about us winning. That’s the focus. I think it would strike fear in some defenses, that’s for sure.
“Justin is a franchise quarterback. He’s a guy that can do a lot of amazing things,” Wilson added. “So, we have two dynamic guys that can do a lot of special things.”
It’s a bit of a bold statement for Wilson to make to call Fields a franchise quarterback. The Chicago Bears obviously didn’t think so, shipping him out of town in favor of Caleb Williams.
Who knows, maybe Fields can prove to be the Steelers franchise quarterback of the future. But if that does end up being the case, that likely means. that Russell Wilson wouldn’t see the field too much. So it is a bit of a strange statement from Wilson altogether…
