When the Pittsburgh Steelers decided to sign veteran quarterback Russell Wilson as a free agent earlier this month, most people expected that he would be the team’s starting quarterback in the fall. But apparently, there’s no guarantee he’ll even be on the roster, especially after the team traded for former Chicago Bears starter Justin Fields.
According to a report from Adam Schefter, the Steelers have “no commitment, obligation, [or] loyalty” to Russell Wilson and could even choose to release him before the start of the 2024 NFL season.
“The fact of the matter is they have the luxury of letting this play out during camp and doing whatever is best for that football team,” Schefter said according to Steeler Nation. “There is no commitment, obligation, loyalty to anyone of these guys. They didn’t pay very much for either one of them. I even had an executive say if Justin Fields outplayed him during training camp, they could see them moving on from him before the season.”
Obviously, this is pretty horrible news for Wilson as he likely signed with the Steelers expecting to be the team’s starting quarterback, and the NFL world had a lot to say about it on social media.

This is obviously possible because he’s on a vet minimum contract. They have no obligation to keep him on. This doesn’t mean it’s what they want to/are going to do. #Steelers https://t.co/suMe8QWOrs

It doesn't seem like the Steelers are very confident in Russell Wilson. #NFL https://t.co/IZ4DFH74tR
