The Pittsburgh Steelers will be returning former starting quarterback Kenny Pickett as he heads into his third season in the league, but it sounds like the team is planning to bring in a veteran starting quarterback to compete with him during the offseason.
According to a joint report from Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero, and Mike Garafolo of NFL Media on Sunday, fans should “expect significant changes at the position in Pittsburgh” as the team is looking to target former Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who is set to become a free agent this offseason.
“With new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, the expectation is Pittsburgh will explore adding free agent Ryan Tannehill, who had his best years with the Titans while Smith was the OC there,” NFL Media reported on Sunday.
Tannehill has been with the Tennessee Titans since 2019 where he has served as the team’s starting quarterback up until this season, when he was replaced by rookie quarterback Will Levis.
Pickett, meanwhile, was the starting quarterback of the Steelers to start the season, but an injury forced him out of the lineup midway through the season. Once he was healthy, he still did not return to the starting lineup as the team opted to stick with Mason Rudolph.
If the team does target Tannehill, it will be interesting to see what happens with the team during the offseason.
