Russell Wilson may have only signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers when he decided to join the team earlier this month, but it sounds like the team is planning to have him as their starting quarterback for quite a bit longer than that.
According to a report from Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers are planning to give Russell Wilson a more long-term contract extension following the 2024 season.
“Russell Wilson signed a one-year contract with the Steelers for the vet minimum because the Broncos were paying him $39 million in 2024. But Wilson and the Steelers intend to do a longer deal at the end of the season, per sources,” Dulac said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

Obviously, this is a significant piece of information regarding Wilson’s future with the team, and it led to a lot of reactions on social media as a result.
I am fully confident that he will play his way out of that contract https://t.co/eQ5Gxo1wHe

I mean, yeah if Wilson is good during the season. But that’s a big “if” based on how he’s played last couple seasons.
They aren’t re-signing him if he plays poorly and/or loses the job to Fields. Which are very real possibilities https://t.co/qy9EJk88Ey

I’m not buying anything pertaining to 2025 until 2024 occurs. I’d recommend all #Steelers fans do the same… https://t.co/60q53REo1W

The Steelers have not had particularly strong play at the quarterback position in recent years and have been looking for stability. We’ll have to see whether or not Wilson can provide that much-desired strength and stability at the game’s most important position.
