The Pittsburgh Steelers entered the free agency period looking for a new punter after parting ways with Pressley Harvin, and when the legal tampering period opened on Monday, the Steelers got perhaps the top punter available.

Sources tell Next Impulse Sports that the Steelers have come to terms with veteran punter Cameron Johnston to bring him to Pittsburgh. Johnston spent the past three years with the Houston Texans after initially signing with the Philadelphia Eagles out of college.

Johnston holds the Texans record for the longest punt in franchise history, booming a 74-yard punt during the 2023 season. Johnston also ranks inside the top 10 in the league in terms of “Inside the 20” percentage over the last three seasons and also ranks among the top 10 in terms of touchback rate the past two seasons. He also led the entire league in punting yardage in 2021.

Originally from Australia, Johnston played four seasons with the Ohio State Buckeyes where he won a national title with the team in 2014. From his time at Ohio State, Johnston has kept a strong presence in Columbus, Ohio where he has friends and family.

The move to Pittsburgh will bring him much closer to Columbus, which played a role in the decision, sources tell Next Impulse Sports.
