Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning (I never get tired of typing that) has a Rain Man-like memory when it comes to football. In early December he called Tennessee video coordinator Joe Harrington and asked a favor:
“I pick up the phone and I go in the corner where it’s quiet, and I’m all, ‘Hello?’ and no ‘Hi, how ya doing?,’ nothing,” Harrington said. “This is what he says: ‘In 1996, Tennessee played Ole Miss in Memphis, in the third quarter we ran a play called Flip Right Duo, X Motion, Fake Roll 98 Block Pass Special. I need you to find that play, I need you to digitize it and I need you to send it to me at Denver, in my email.’
“Exactly where he said it would be is what he said would happen.”
I can barely remember what I wore last Thursday and here’s Peyton Manning, not only remembering a play but adding which game and at what point IN that game he ran it. Unbelievable.
The video shows some highlights of Joe and Peyton working through film, including that very play, as well as Denver practicing it. They haven’t used it (yet) but it only cements what the commentators have been saying for years:
Peyton Manning has a high football IQ.
