It’s not often that someone goes out of their way to praise the referees from an NFL game, but after the way the Super Bowl LVIII matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers was officiated, the entire crew received some heavy praise from one prominent NFL insider.
In his Football Morning in America column on Monday, NFL insider Peter King took some time to praise the officiating crew from last week’s Super Bowl, pointing out that it’s rare to see such a high-profile football game that draws so little commentary on the officials.
“I owe you one, Bill Vinovich. The best-officiated games are the ones with the officials you don’t notice. I do not remember a big game with so little commentary on the zebras as Super Bowl LVIII. Congrats to Vinovich and the crew: umpire Terry Killens Jr., down judge Patrick Holt, line judge Mark Perlman, field judge Tom Hill, side judge Allen Baynes, back judge Brad Freeman and replay official Mike Chase,” King wrote for Pro Football Talk on Monday morning.
Obviously, no game is called perfectly and there were no doubt some mistakes and missed calls throughout the game. But King is largely right that it was a very uncontroversial performance from the officiating crew in the biggest game of the season.
