Wise stance or not, Packers wide receiver James Jones offered an unusually fresh and reasonable perspective on player safety this week.
When asked on NFL Network what he would do if commish for a day, Jones said he has no problem getting hit in the head and would allow more helmet-to-helmet hits.
“I think the helmet-to-helmet rule, where defenders have to hit at a certain target, I think they need to eliminate that,” he said. “I’d rather get hit in the helmet and shoulder than have a defender take my knees out.”
With the seemingly endless number of former players leading a gung-ho lawsuit against the NFL, the veteran wide receiver has taken a little-used stance in accepting the physicality of the game.
He was also asked if he needs protection from opposing hits, responding “That’s what my helmet is for.”
I like it.
