The new NFL postseason rules came into effect for the first time during the Super Bowl LVIII showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers, and they were largely a great success and were received quite well by fans. But as the NFL decides whether or not to implement them for the regular season, there is one big drawback.
As NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated points out, the big problem with the overtime rules is that they could make some NFL games even longer than they would otherwise be, adding snaps to what has already turned into quite a long season that wears on players’ bodies.
“I will be interested to hear the discussion on whether or not to implement the playoff OT rules in the regular season. One strike against the idea that won’t be discussed as much publicly, but is relevant to the players, is how that would stand to add snaps to an already really long season, and put more miles on more bodies,” Breer wrote for Sports Illustrated.
We’ll have to see whether or not the NFL opts to use the new overtime rules or keeps the same ones in place to try to limit the number of snaps players play during the season.
