The New York Jets began last year with soaring expectations after future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers joined the team during the offseason, but those expectations took a huge hit when Rodgers suffered a season-ending injury during the team’s first game, leaving Zach Wilson to guide the team the remainder of the season. And it’s pretty clear that Jets owner Woody Johnson did not think he performed well enough.
During an interview on Thursday night at the NFL Honors awards show in Las Vegas, New York Jets team owner Woody Johnson called out Zach Wilson for his performance in relief of Aaron Rodgers last season, saying that the team “didn’t have” a backup quarterback.
“You need a backup quarterback,” he said according to ESPN. “We didn’t have one last year.”
Johnson made it clear that how the team looked on the offensive side of the ball was not good enough.
“The discussions I’ve had in the last couple of months, they’ve seen me about as mad as I can be with what was going on, with the offense particularly,” Johnson said. “We have all this talent, and we have to deploy talent properly. So I think they all got the message. This is it. This is the time to go. We’ve got to produce this year.”
We’ll have to see whether or not the Jets can improve on offense, and what happens with Wilson.
