The New York Giants are returning offensive coordinator Mike Kafka this offseason, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he will be returning to his role as a play-caller. As the team goes through organized team activities, they are exploring what would be a pretty notable change as head coach Brian Daboll has been serving as the team’s play-caller as the team experiments with the possibility of him holding that role this season.
During a press conference this week, Brian Daboll opened up a little bit about the possibility of serving as the team’s primary play-caller this season, but he made it clear that a final decision whether or not he’ll ultimately take on that role likely won’t come for a few months.
“I’ve called plays for a long time,” Daboll said according to Pro Football Talk. “So it’s good to get out here at practice and do it, but there’s a whole process that goes through with it. There’s training camp. There’s OTAs. And I’ll make the decision, like I said back in March, that I feel is best.”
The Giants quite clearly need to be better on the offensive side of the ball this upcoming season. Perhaps Daboll will think it’s best if he is the one to call the plays.
