The New Orleans Saints were expected to make a decision on their backup quarterback before the start of the regular season, but it sounds like that’s actually not going to happen.
During a press conference on Tuesday, New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen announced the surprising decision that the backup quarterback competition between Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler would continue throughout the regular season as the two quarterbacks are “still competing.”
“They’re still competing and I really want that to be that way throughout the course of the season, that those guys are coming out here every day and they’re competing. It’s a healthy competition. I think both those guys have done well,” Allen said in his press conference, according to Jeff Nowak.
He said both players have to continue to develop, regardless: "We've got to find ways to get reps for these guys." He says the challenge/goal will be making sure both guys get the work they need to keep developing. Pretty clear there will be no QB2 declaration today.

“We’ve got to find ways to get reps for these guys,” Allen continued.
The two quarterbacks competed throughout training camp and preseason, but it sounds like neither one of them was able to separate from the other and earn the job.
Both quarterbacks are expected to remain on the roster throughout the season. It will be interesting to see which will ultimately be listed as the backup when the team releases its depth charts.
