The New England Patriots have decided to go with veteran Jacoby Brissett as the team’s starting quarterback for the upcoming NFL season over rookie first-round pick Drake Maye. And head coach Jerod Mayo made it very clear that they are committed to him as their starter.
During a press conference on Thursday morning following the decision, Jerod Mayo indicated that the team was not going to force any reps on rookie Drake Maye for the sake of development. As long as Jacoby Brissett performs well, he will be the team’s starting quarterback and Maye will be the backup behind him.
“I don’t want to get into hypotheticals,” Mayo said according to Pro Football Talk. “We can’t go into the season saying ‘He’s going to go ‘X’ amount of weeks.’ Look — as long as Jacoby is going out there performing the way we all have confidence in him doing, he’ll be our quarterback this season.”
The Patriots have clearly liked what they have seen from Maye this offseason and think of him as the quarterback of the future, but it sounds like they are fully committed to allowing the veteran Jacoby Brissett to lead the team this season.
