When the New England Patriots selected former North Carolina star quarterback Drake Maye with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, most fans assumed that he would be the starting quarterback for the team this upcoming season. But it sounds like the team is going with a veteran starter, instead.

According to a report from league insider Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network, New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo has informed the team that veteran Jacoby Brissett will be the team’s starting quarterback this year over rookie first-round pick Drake Maye.

Now official: Patriots coach Jerod Mayo informed players in a team meeting that Jacoby Brissett is the starting QB, while Drake Maye will be his backup. Brissett told [NFL Network] in August, ‘I’m the perfect person to mentor the guys, but I’m also the perfect person to start,'” Rapoport said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

Obviously, the team still has high hopes for Maye and is eager to see how he develops. But for now, the team will be led by Brissett – and the shocking decision led to a lot of reactions on social media.

Maye might be the future for the Patriots, but the present is Brissett.
