Last year, the New England Patriots hired Jerod Mayo after parting ways with legendary head coach Bill Belichick. But it sounds like they’re already looking for another change.
According to a report from the NFL Network, the New England Patriots have decided to fire head coach Jerod Mayo after just one season.
“The #Patriots are moving on from coach Jerod Mayo, as the handpicked successor to Bill Belichick goes one-and-done, per me, [Mike Garafolo] and [Tom Pelissero],” NFL insider Ian Rapoport said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
“The Krafts anointed Mayo last year, but a troubling season led them to a change,” Rapoport continued.
While Mayo has been fired, the Rapoport indicates that the Patriots have not made any other changes to the front office.
“To be specific, this firing only affects Jerod Mayo. The front office remains intact, as of now,” Rapoport said in a follow-up post.
Rapoport finished the season with just a 4-13 record in his first season as a head coach.
It’s not clear who the Patriots intend to target as his replacement, but it is clear that the team is looking for new leadership after just one season with him leading the way.
We’ll have to see what’s next for the organization.
