The New England Patriots selected Drake Maye with the No. 3 overall pick in the draft and are trying to get him prepared to become a starting quarterback in the league while also giving first-team reps to veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who will be the team’s starter until Maye proves himself ready. But it doesn’t sound like head coach Jerod Mayo is concerned about a lack of reps for Maye.
During a recent press conference, Jerod Mayo was asked if there is any concern about Drake Maye not receiving enough opportunities to properly develop during practice. Mayo said that Maye “is taking advantage of the opportunities that he gets” and he does not think a lack of opportunities is the issue for Maye at this point.
“No. My message is, it’s not how many opportunities, it’s what you do with the opportunities that you get,” Mayo said according to Pro Football Talk. “Look, going back to the competition part of it, the better you do on a day-after-day basis, not just on the field but also in the classroom, the more reps you’ll get going forward.”
Both Mayo and Director of Player Personnel Elliot Wolf have made it clear that Maye still has a long way before he’s ready to become the starter for the team, but it doesn’t sound like they believe that that is due to a lack of opportunities.
