The New England Patriots were one of the worst teams in the league on the offensive side of the ball last season, particularly when it came to throwing the ball downfield. And it seems like the Patriots tried their best to improve in that regard this offseason, even targeting a superstar wide receiver.
According to a report from NFL insider Josina Anderson of CBS Sports, the New England Patriots tried to trade for San Francisco 49ers star wide receiver Deebo Samuel ahead of this year’s NFL Draft.
“I’m told the #Patriots had preliminary trade discussions on #49ers WR Deebo Samuel prior to the NFL Draft, per source. In general, when teams explore potential transactions with other clubs, finding middle ground on compensation can be challenging. There are always many considerable factors on why the price should possibly be one thing, or another,” Anderson said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
The Patriots also tried to trade for Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, according to a report from Adam Schefter. While neither trade was successful, it’s clear that the Patriots were quite serious about trying to upgrade their offense this offseason.
