The Dallas Cowboys are hoping to make a quick turnaround next season after a disastrous 2024 campaign. While injuries can be blamed for a lot of Dallas’ struggles this season, fans and pundits still called for a regime change.
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones vocalized support for the head coach throughout the season, but when it was time to hit the negotiating table, Jones and McCarthy couldn’t find a starting point for contract talks.
After McCarthy and the organization decided to part ways, Dallas began its pursuit of the team’s next head coach.
The Cowboys were immediately linked to splash hires such as Deion Sanders and Pete Carroll. While talks were had with both, Dallas ultimately decided to take a much quieter approach.
Dallas promoted offensive coordinator Brian Shcottenmeir to the job, his first head coaching post in the league. Now, according to one prominent league insider, Schottenmeir will be tasked with finding a new leader for his defense.
“Mike Zimmer tells me that he will not be returning to the (Cowboys) as a member of Brian Schottenheimer’s coaching staff and will likely retire from coaching in the NFL. Zimmer served as defensive coordinator last season. Cowboys likely to hire Matt Eberflus as DC, per sources,” reported ESPN’s Ed Werder.

Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“Can’t say that I blame him,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“They bringing in the ex bears coach…. winning isn’t on the menu anymore,” one fan added.
“I didn’t think Zimmer did a bad job, but I believe Eberflus is an upgrade here. All eyes will be on the offense next year. If they cannot improve this team is (out of luck),” another fan added.
It’ll be interesting to see if Dallas can get things back on track without Zimmer’s experience.
