When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers declined to use their franchise tag on veteran superstar wide receiver Mike Evans, it made it clear that Evans would be hitting free agency. And it sounds like he already has a pretty good idea of what he’s looking for in his next team as he is set to become a free agent next month.
Deryk Gilmore, the agent of Mike Evans, made it pretty clear what his client is looking for in a quote to NFL insider Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report.
“Mike wants to play with an elite quarterback in an offense that will showcase him — and be paid like a top wide receiver. He doesn’t want to play with a rookie QB. Winning a Super Bowl is a key priority,” Gilmore told Schultz this week.
Obviously, the Buccaneers are expected to try to re-sign Evans and this quote wouldn’t necessarily rule out Tampa Bay if they are able to re-sign Baker Mayfield or bring in another elite quarterback. Still, it sure sounds like Evans is intending to test the free agency waters and put himself in a strong offense where he can perform and contend for a Super Bowl.
We’ll have to see what happens, but it’s clear what he wants.
