For the entire time that Kirk Cousins has been the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, his contract with the team has been fully guaranteed. But as he is set to become a free agent this offseason, it sounds like the team is unwilling to give him another fully-guaranteed contract to keep him in Minnesota.
According to a report from NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the Minnesota Vikings really like Kirk Cousins, but they aren’t willing to give him a full guaranteed contract.
“The current Minnesota brass, now going into its third season, really likes Cousins, but it’s also been made clear that they’re not going to go contractually where the previous regime did twice, and give Cousins a fully guaranteed deal. Absent that, Cousins is now in position to hit the market like he did six years ago, this time older and, of course, more injured,” Breer wrote for Sports Illustrated.
So with the Vikings unwilling to give Cousins a fully guaranteed contract, it sounds like he will become an unrestricted free agent in March and will be able to negotiate with any team in need of a veteran quarterback.
Of course, there’s still a chance that Cousins could ultimately decide to still sign with the Minnesota Vikings, but it’s pretty clear it won’t be a on a fully guaranteed deal.
