The Philadelphia Eagles are winning games despite not looking like their usual dominant selves.
The Eagles handled business against the New York Giants on Sunday, winning 28-3, but one line stands out in the box score. Star wide receiver DeVonta Smith ended the day with only one catch for negative two yards.
The eagles are still looking competitive in the NFC North, but want to make sure every player is ready for a deep playoff run as they look to get back to the Super Bowl and win the second in franchise history. Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator addressed his star’s struggles in a press conference on Tuesday.
“Yeah, those are never ideal,” Kellen Moore said, according to Pro Football Talk. “You know ‘Smitty’ is one of the premiere players for us and sometimes unfortunately goofy things happen like this where he only ends up with the one catch for minus-2 yards because it was kind of a bubble screen.
“Obviously, we had different visions as we go into the game of getting him involved and sometimes it just doesn’t happen.
“But you know, he was in it the whole time which is a testament to him, just his run blocking ability. He made some excellent blocks downfield to spring our running backs on some plays.
“Sometimes the ball doesn’t go his way. We feel very comfortable and confident that things naturally will correct itself over the course of the next week or two, and he is certainly right there.”
It’ll be interesting to see if Smith is actually able to get back on track, considering his quarterback, Jalen Hurts, doesn’t seem anything like the same player who led the team to the Super Bowl only a couple seasons ago.
