The Los Angeles Chargers have not seen the immediate success they were hoping for under new head coach Jim Harbaugh.
The Chargers are still 2-2 but are losing ground quickly to their division rivals, the Kansas City Chiefs who are pacing the AFC at 5-0. The Chargers lost two straight games heading into their bye week, and their offense was a big part of their struggles.
The defense has performed admirably, holding their opponents to just 37 points through four games, but the offense has only mustered 20 and still has yet to score in the second half. The bye week has allowed players to get healthy, including star quarterback Justin Herbert, who is trying to get through the growing pains under his new coach.
According to ESPN, Herbert spoke on Wednesday about the bye week and the process of getting comfortable with his new staff.
“I thought it came at the right time,” Herbert said of the chance to rest up.
“You have to be patient and understand that, hey, we’re going to get things right,” Herbert went on.
“We haven’t played the way we want to, but there’s never a time to panic. Panicking doesn’t help. We got the right guys out there. It’s a new offense. It’s a tough offense. We’re going to get it picked up and no one is panicking or worried about that. As long as we’re moving forward and getting better, that’s all you can ask.”
Herbert obviously isn’t happy or satisfied with how he and the offense have performed thus far, but there’s a lot of season left to get things ironed out. It’ll be interesting to see how he comes out of the gate in Los Angeles’ next game against the Denver Broncos.
