With the start of the 2024 NFL season less than two weeks away, the Pittsburgh Steelers are one of two teams yet to have settled on a starting quarterback, the other being the New England Patriots.
As he continues to compete with Russell Wilson for the Steelers’ starting quarterback job, Justin Fields believes he’s made a strong case.
“I think I’ve shown what I can do,” Fields said Thursday, according to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor. “I think the time that I did have with the [first team] practicing in training camp, I think that went well. I think we grew a lot each and every day, but at the end of the day, it’s not up to me.
“I mean, I’m just going to come in here every day, each and every day, the same person, being a leader for this team and work my butt off, and everything else will be handled.”
Acquired by the Steelers in an offseason trade with the Chicago Bears, Fields entered training camp seemingly trailing Wilson in Pittsburgh’s quarterback competition. Wilson, however, sustained an injury during his conditioning test, which opened the door for the former Ohio State star to get increased reps with the Steelers’ first-team.
At this point, the competition appears to be too close to call as Pittsburgh prepares for its Week 1 matchup vs. the Atlanta Falcons. To this point, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has remained mum on when he’ll make a call on who his team’s starting quarterback will be.
