The San Francisco 49ers didn’t see much go their way this season, where they hoped to repeat as NFC champions and avenge last season’s Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Instead, the Niners went 6-11 and missed the playoffs entirely.
The 49ers’ struggles can be largely attributed to a host of injuries to star players that completely derailed momentum every time they tried to string together strong showings.
Many speculated that the organization would move in a new direction with head coach Kyle Shanahan and starting quarterback Brock Purdy. Purdy especially, struggled to replicate his previous success this season.
Purdy threw for around 400 fewer yards than last season, and his touchdown total dropped from 31 to 20 while increasing his interception total. As a result, Purdy’s QB rating cratered from 113.0 to 96.1, according to FOX News.
San Francisco was quick to reaffirm its commitment to Shanahan, and now General Manager John Lynch has addressed Purdy’s future with the team.
“What we know about Brock is that he’s our guy. We have interest in Brock being around here for a long, long time,” Lynch said on Wednesday, per FOX. “He’s done so much for our organization.
“He’s won big games and had a little tougher task, as we all did this year, with some of the things that happened throughout the course of the year. We just never could string games where we were all together. And through that, he continued to lead, he continued to play at a high level, so we have every interest in him being around.”
It’s clear the 49ers are sticking with Purdy. It’ll be interesting to see if he can get back to his usual self next season.
