The National Football League fined Houston Texans star Joe Mixon, but the league has admitted they made a mistake along the way. The NFL fined Mixon $25,000 for comments made against officials following the Texans’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
But there was just one problem.
As Pro Football Talk pointed out, the league fined Mixon for comments that he never made.
“Mixon didn’t say it. The quote is from a tweet included in an SI.com story regarding Mixon’s actual comments after the game,” they wrote. As it turns out, he never actually said that. Mixon said something completely different in discussing the way the officials called the game. So the NFL made a terrible blunder, to say the least.
The NFL acknowledged the costly error, and while they still punished Mixon for comments he made, they were comments he did actually make. Instead of the ones that were miscredited to him.
Mixon and the Texans won the AFC South after an up-and-down season. The Texans defeated Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL Wild Card Round before falling to reigning champion Kansas City.
As most will tell you, beating Kansas City this point might be more difficult than anything. The NFL’s best team has maddened nearly everyone around. So for Houston, there’s certainly no shame in their performance. Defensive star Will Anderson Jr. looked outstanding all game, and there were plenty of reasons for optimism.
At least the Texans won’t have to deal with anymore headaches regarding this unusual blunder by the NFL.
