The New England Patriots selected former North Carolina Tar Heels star quarterback Drake Maye with the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL Draft on Thursday night, but he was not the only quarterback the Patriots selected in the draft as they also took Joe Milton from the Tennessee Volunteers. And it sounds like he is excited to compete – but only at quarterback.
Joe Milton will be joining a quarterbacks room that is already quite full with Jacoby Brissett, Bailey Zappe and Nathan Rourke all on the current roster in addition to Maye. Milton acknowledged the other players and said that he is “just going to have to compete” for a chance to play quarterback in New England.
Throughout the pre-draft process, there was some speculation that some teams might want him to consider changing positions, moving to tight end instead of quarterback. But it doesn’t sound like he’s remotely interested in that idea.
“You are the first person I have actually heard that from, to be real with you. But, that will never happen,” Milton said according to Pro Football Talk.
So it sounds like it’s going to be quarterback or bust for Milton with the Patriots. We’ll have to see how his career shakes out.
