Last month, Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was hit with a two-game suspension from the NFL for violating the league’s substance policy. As a result, it was widely expected that the team would choose to cut him this offseason – and it sounds like that’s exactly what’s going to happen.
According to a report from NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Las Vegas Raiders have decided to cut Jimmy Garoppolo and are expected to make the move on Wednesday.
“The Las Vegas Raiders are expected to cut QB Jimmy Garoppolo tomorrow, per sources. There are a few teams interested,” Russini said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
As a result of his suspension, Garoppolo’s $11.25 million base salary guarantee for the 2024 season would now be voided, allowing the Raiders to cut Garoppolo without having to suffer a monetary penalty.
The Raiders signed veteran quarterback Gardner Minshew on Tuesday to join Aidan O’Connell, who replaced Garoppolo as the starting quarterback during the 2024 NFL Season. There’s also a chance that the team could decide to select a rookie quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft.
It will be interesting to see who ends up as the starter for the team next season, but it’s clear it won’t be Garoppolo.
