Jim Tomsula must have either been completely unprepared for any sit-down interviews or he was told to not say anything of consequence to the media in the most obstinate way possible.
There’s no other way to explain this beautiful piece of performance art which Tomsula put on for Comcast Bay Area.
Here are some examples which show Tomsula’s deft touch with the media.
On who Jim Tomsula would like as his offensive coordinator:
“Yeh-uh.”
On who he had in mind for defensive coordinator:
“Ye-ah-uh-uh-uh-ah, I’m really not going to do that out of respect for those people.”
On what play style he has in mind for the 49ers:
“The style that fits our players.”
On whether he’d look at other teams’ defensive coordinators to help fill his staff:
“I wouldn’t not say that. I wouldn’t say it either.”
There is a right way and a wrong way to “say nothing” to the media and Tomsula’s awkward, mumbling and standoffish manner certainly falls under the wrong way. Even Bill Belichick displays more charisma with the media when he puts as much effort into saying as little as possible. Tomsula’s stonewalling wasn’t done particularly well and even worse, it made him come off as over-his-head rather than protective of his plans for the team. (Seriously, the grunting from the first thirty seconds of that clip seem to last forever.)
After all, it’s not like Jim Tomsula was asked anything that he likely hasn’t already been asked by 49ers management. The transition away from Jim Harbaugh was always going to be a hard sell for the 49ers but they aren’t making it look any easier right now.
