This offseason, Derrick Henry made it pretty clear that he was interested in joining the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent and the Cowboys were in need of a running back. But now we know why the team didn’t pursue him.
Derrick Henry trains in the Dallas area during the offseason and recently indicated that he was interested in signing with the Dallas Cowboys when he hit free agency this offseason. However, no call ever came from the Cowboys.
On Sunday, Cowboys team owner and general manager Jerry Jones explained why.
After Henry rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns against the Cowboys on Sunday afternoon, Jerry Jones made it clear that the decision not to pursue Henry came down to one thing: money.
“We couldn’t afford Derrick Henry,” Jones said according to Pro Football Talk.
Jones was then asked why the team couldn’t afford Henry, and he laughed as he gave his answer.
“I don’t know. Why can’t you buy a mansion when you live in a different kind of house?” Jones said. “We couldn’t afford it. We can’t make that all fit. That’s as simple as that.”
Instead, the Cowboys brought back veteran Ezekiel Elliott on a $3 million contract – a much cheaper option.
