New England Patriots new head coach Jerod Mayo is still learning the ropes as an NFL head coach, and apparently, that includes being careful what he says in the media.
Earlier in the offseason, during his introductory press conference with the team, Jerod Mayo indicated that the team had a lot of free salary cap space and intended to “burn some cash” to bring in some new players in free agency. But apparently, Mayo wishes that he would not have said that.
During a recent interview, Mayo called the “burn some cash” comments a rookie mistake, and clarified that while the team will spend money, they will also “be smart” about how they spend that money.
“That’s alright. Because we have to be smart,” Mayo said according to NESN. “Once again, the burning of cash was a mistake. In saying that, we do have cash and we’ll spend it on guys that we think will make this team better.”
The Patriots have added some players during free agency, but it certainly isn’t quite to the level that fans or media were expecting given Mayo’s initial “burn some cash” comments.
It’s likely that Mayo will be a lot more careful about what he says going forward.
