Longtime New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick became well-known for how much control he liked to have over the team and the organization, but with Belichick now gone, it sounds like new head coach Jerod Mayo is taking a very different approach to leading the team.
During a recent interview, veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett indicated that Jerod Mayo is taking a very players-first approach to leading the team where he looks to the players to run the team instead of doing everything himself or putting coaches in charge.
“He brings a lot of good energy,” Brissett said of Mayo’s coaching style according to Mike Reiss of ESPN. “The cool thing is you can tell he’s trying to make the players on the team run the team. Obviously, he’s the head coach and he sets the standard, but he definitely puts a lot of responsibility on us players. I like it.”
Obviously, this is a pretty major change from the way the Belichick used to lead the team during his long stint with the Patriots. It will certainly be interesting to see how this new approach works out for Mayo and the team as they enter into a new era.
