If there is one thing that can be learned from this post by James Harrison, it’s that he believes that nothing should ever be given freely, even nominal awards. Harrison was presented with these two participation trophies from his sons and Harrison treated them as if they were plagues upon his house.
I mean, his boys DID participate, so they probably earned those participation trophies, even if giving awards for participation may seem extremely redundant. The good news for the Harrison kids is that they can get the trophies back when they win a “real” one.
Whatever debates people have on parenting styles, I’m pretty sure that no one ever purposefully guns for a participation trophy.
